Pickman's Model: "You recall that Pickman's forte was faces. I don't believe anybody since Goya could put so much of sheer hell into a set of features or a twist of expression. And before Goya you have to go back to the mediaeval chaps who did the gargoyles and chimaeras on Notre Dame and Mont Saint-Michel." The Hound: "A locked portfolio, bound in tanned human skin, held certain unknown and unnamable drawings which it was rumoured Goya had perpetrated but dared not acknowledge." Goya is one of the most renowned artists in history, famous for ... and his often morbid dark paintings. ... for an oeuvre as laden with witches and monsters as Fuseli’s. Many of these are in the Caprichos, a series of aquatint prints which are often satirical in intent but which show the range of the artist’s imagination. For Pickman HPL may have had in mind the so-called Black Paintings which decorated the wall’s of the artist’s home. It tells us something about Goya’s character that he painted Saturn Devouring His Son on the wall of his dining room. HPLs letter to William Lumley, 21 December 1931: "Another artist who went even farther than Hogarth in depicting human bestiality is the Spaniard, Goya.” Cheerio Der Läuterer
