I have seen the dark universe yawning

Where the black planets roll without aim

Where they roll in their horror unheeded

Without knowledge of luster or name.

--- H.P. Lovecraft, Nemesis ---

SYNOPSIS:

Astronomers have theorized that our sun is not alone in its journey around the galaxy, but is accompanied by an unknown second star of dim radiance. This second star, while perhaps invisible from Earth even with the finest optics, would periodically pass close enough to our solar system to have far-reaching effects upon the evolution of this planet.

Few attended the funeral of the old man. And even fewer saw the headless apparition which appeared in an investigator's room. Soon the investigator and his friends are drawn into horrifying events, luring them accross the United States, overseas to the Andaman Islands and to the interior of Tibet, and to places even further beyond. Gradually they come to understand the dread fate toward which the Earth hurtles, a fate which only they can avert. Through their persistence they begin to unravel a secret implying doom for everyone.

Behold the Mother

Setting: 1920s

Locations: Arkham, Dunwich

Creatures: The Twin-Creature, The Spawn, The Mother of Pus, Shub-Niggurath

Tomes and Artifacts: Nameless Cults, Journal of Hillary Hetfield

SYNOPSIS:

A female acquaintance of an investigator suffered a gruesome death near the city dump. The enquiries draw the investigators to Arkham's seedy slums, to the degenerated town of Dunwich, to an extremely wicked relative and into a mystery of dark secrets that started decades ago. And one of these secrets may help herald the return of the Old Ones...

The victim, a normal seeming woman had deep secrets of the mythos, hidden even from herself. She blocked out the suffered trauma, found a job and a home and created a normal past for herself.

The woman was born out of wedlock pregnancy and she had a siamese twin. A brother, who had been removed from her back soon after their birth. But unknown to everyone, but her insane mother, the brother survived and kept hidden in the attic. This creature is a warped and twisted mockery of malice and scar tissue.

Half a year ago he raped her, because her mother intents to create a goddess of rot and decay. A goddess to guide the world toward the return of the Great Old Ones...

When the investigators discover the journals of the cultist mother, and the dread pages of the Unaussprachlichen Kulten of von Junzt, they learn of the coming of the Mother of Pus, the avatar of Shub-Niggurath, and harbinger of the end times.

The investigators may have the opportunity to prevent, or rather delay, the apocalypse, in a showdown at the town's municipal dump. Nonetheless, even if they succeed, they will have the chance to see the Black Goat of the Woods far closer than they should like to, and have to battle both mother and the loathsome spawn of her two offsprings. Should they fail, the consequences are suitably terrible.

Great scenario - highly atmospheric - MUST PLAY

TERROR AUSTRALIS

Chaosium - 1987 - CoC3

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Man must be prepared to accept notions of the cosmos, and of his own place in the seething vortex of time, whose merest mention is paralyzing. He must, too, be placed on guard against a specific, lurking peril which, though it will never engulf the whole race, may impose monstrous and unguessable horrors on certain venturesome members of it.

--- H.P. Lovecraft ---

Pride of Yirrimburra

Setting: 1920s

Locations: Yirrimburra township, the MacKenzie mine

SYNOPSIS:

A simple family visit transforms into dangerous business, as the investigators match wits with a town and with the unknowable to bring justice from a tragedy of racism and vengeance.

Having decided to travel to Australia, an investigator is told to be sure and visit their old uncle Jack, a reformed black sheep who made a small fortune gold-mining. They soon learn the township is plagued by unexplained deaths, and has a ghostly history.

The township of Yirrimburra is cursed by the crimes of decades ago. Men who are now leading citizens were part of a posse, decades ago, who massacred an Aboriginal tribe and set up a mine on their sacred land. Now they are dying.

The cause of the deaths is the last survivor of the massacre, who has spent the intervening years growing in mystic power and in hatred. He alters the killers’ dreams to send them fully into the Dreamtime, where their souls are hunted and destroyed by legendary monsters. Once the men are dead, he plans to burn the township to the ground, wiping away all trace of the white invaders just as they wiped out his people.

Meanwhile, local youths are stealing gold from the mine, and their actions complicate life and investigations alike when they accidentally kill one of the watchmen.

Investigators trying to unravel the mystery must deal with notables desperate to avoid a well-justified murder charge, with citizens inclined to back the men who’ve done so much for their community, and potentially with the deadly attentions of a master of Dreaming.

This is an exploratory adventure, based on social interaction and research, with an open-ended conclusion. There are no monsters here, no cultists; the villains of the piece are (depending on your perspective) the bitter old man casting murderous spells, or the old men who concealed their own crimes and will fight hard to keep them hidden. Investigators may save the last victims, insist that justice be done, or allow the survivor to wreak his final vengeance – or indeed, abandon the township to its fate entirely.

Old Fellow that Bunyip

Setting: 1920s

Locations: National Museum of Victoria, Royal Botanical Gardens, Melbourne

Creatures: Bunyip

SYNOPSIS:

The investigators visit the cultured and up-to-date city of Melbourne. A series of mysterious manglings and drownings is plaguing the city, and police are baffled. A terror grips the place: the River Ripper is on the prowl.

Draining and building work has transformed the ancient landscape, and disturbed a bunyip where it lay imprisoned beneath the waters. Shaken from its Dreaming, anguished and confused, the creature now roams the river preying on passers-by.

A group of Aboriginal Australians have tried to defuse the problem by luring the bunyip away, hoping to trap it in another remote cave where it may safely Dream in peace. However, they were arrested attempting to take vital artefacts from a local museum, and now rot in prison.

Meanwhile, a fragile war veteran has seen the bunyip and fallen insane. He now stalks the riverbanks for victims to sacrifice to his terrible watery god.

The bunyip is immortal and cannot be harmed or deterred by normal means. The only way to resolve the situation is to free the Aboriginal prisoners, and assist them in chasing the bunyip downriver into a mystical trap. Dealing with the serial killer is optional.

City Beneath the Sands

Setting: 1920s

Locations: Darwin, Sydney, Port Hedland, Cuncudgerie, the desert, City of the Great Race

Creatures: Great Race of Yith, Bat-Things, Flying Polyp, Haunter of the Dark, Father of All Bats, Zombies

Tomes and Artifacts: Wondrous Intelligences, lightning gun

SYNOPSIS:

The investigators are asked along on a preliminary expedition to the Australian deserts, where the papers of a dead archaeologist hint at a lost city.

The city is a relic of the Great Race of Yith. The area is now being investigated by a priest of Nyarlathotep in the form of the Sand Bat. A revived cult of Aboriginal and white desperados patrols the area. The investigators are expected to encounter a miners' camp destroyed by a Mythos creature, where they learn of the cult. They may be ambushed by cultists before reaching the city. Here, a mystical band of Aborigines may help them enter the city. Inside, they must brave Flying Polyps and cultists to find the heart of the complex, where the priest has enslaved a Yithian to help build a doomsday device.

Actually this is the Australian chapter of the Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign.

Appears in: Masks of Nyarlathotep 3rd & 4th Ed.

The Books of Uncle Silas**

Setting: 1920s

Locations: Arkham, Boston

Creatures: Star Vampire

Tomes and Artifacts: Cthaat Aquadingen, Necronomicon, Monstres and Their Kynde, unknown tome, Aztec relic, mummified cat.

SYNOPSIS:

The investigators are called to Arkham after the death of an uncle one of them didn't know he had.

The investigators are summoned to Arkham to deal with the will of "Uncle Silas", an unknown relative of at least one investigator. It turns out they're not who they thought they were. Silas' family were the traditional guardians of four dangerous Mythos tomes, until his brother Darcus fell insane and killed all but Silas and the chosen investigator in an effort to seize them for his own purposes. Darcus has recently escaped from an asylum and is tracking down his brother.

The investigators clear out the junk-crammed, delapidated house and sell off most of it. Only then do they receive a letter from Uncle Silas which had gone astray in the lawyers' office, warning them about the books and Darcus. They must track down from the bookseller who purchased them, who is slaughtered by a star vampire in the middle of their conversation. The investigators attempt to survive the star vampire, recover the books, and defeat the mad uncle.

GASLIGHT 1890 SETTING

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Straight lines and right angles are simply straight lines and right angles the world over, but the delicate and particular curves of a town slowly reared on a certain spot have a priceless wealth of suggestion pertaining to place and people; a suggestion which makes every narrow, devious hillside lane, rich with its mellow limning of antique, characteristick doorways and windows and chimneys and gables, a veritable gateway of memory and mystery... London! Majestick, ineffable, and immemorial!

Eyes for the Blind

Locations: Twyford station and train, Berkshire, Cornwall, London, Avebury, Silbury Hill, gypsy fairgrounds

Creatures: Zombie, Green Man

Tomes and Artifacts: Necronomicon

SYNOPSIS:

A gentle breeze wafts across Platform Five of Twyford Station. You wait for the ten o'clock train for Henley-on-Thames, for soon the Henley Royal Regatta begins. Attending the regatta is in high fashion, and patronized by royalty. Not only tremendously entertaining, the regatta is an important meeting-place of contacts, both business and casual. The train arrives bearing a single first-class car, as usual for runs during the regatta. Everyone files aboard, takng their seats, and the journey begins. Clacking rails pass below. A tunnel approaches, quiet darkness falls, and two men die - a blind man and a stockbroker.

A cabal of sorcerers, lead by a 450 year old wizard who lives with a gypsy fair, has plans to raise the Dulcarnon - the 'intermediary life-spirit of Britain'. Their plans involve the construction of an effigy called The Green Man, which will house a part of the spirit when it is awakened. The murder on the train is a part of these nefarious plans, and by investigating the odd deaths the investigators become drawn into a complex trail of clues across several different parts of Britain. The ancient wizard has an unusual magical ability: while his body is severely aged and frail, he can see through the eyes of any of an army of (apparently blind) zombie corpses which are slaves to his will. Thus, as the characters pursue their investigation they have an odd collection of mysterious blind men with tinted spectacles closely following their movements.

The scenario is suitable for vets only.

The Menace from Sumatra

Locations: London

Creatures: The Thing from Beyond

SYNOPSIS:

A blind man dressed in rags stumbles into Hyde Park police station and expires in front of the investigators, but not before exhorting them to 'save Susan'. The strange blue vapour surrounding the man, as well as the fact that he possesses no eyeballs, compels them to investigate further.

On a recent expedition to the Western coast of Sumatra, a pair of British scientists discovered a strange blue fungus, associated with a Mythos god called Vibur. While one of the principals seemed to fall under the terrible influence of the primitive natives the other fled with his wife, afraid for their lives. They made their way back to London, but unbeknownst to them they were pursued by Granger with a contingent of cultists and their god. Ultimately these unpleasant forces captured the unfortunate scientist, infecting him with the terrible spores of the fungus. His wife managed to escape such a fate, but became amnesiac from the shock, and is still wandering the streets of London in confusion. The infected scientist, Windebank, ultimately escaped his captivity only to expire in the police station during the opening scene of the adventure.

Lord of the Dance

Locations: London Underground, Cornwall, Thaxted, Tollesbury

Creatures: Byakhee, Dimensional Shambler, Zoog, Hound of Tindalos, The Child

SYNOPSIS:

Dorothy Amis, a relative or acquaintance of the investigators, has suddenly become 'bereft of reason' for no apparent cause. So bad is her condition that she has been confined to a private nursing home in Kent. Discovered huddled in an unfinished tunnel which forms part of the London Underground, questions have obviously been asked as to the circumstances behind her curious madness. It is up to the investigators to unearth the truth.

The previous attempt to summon the Dulcarnon - the 'spirit of Britain' - was thwarted in Eyes For The Blind, but not all of the cabal of sorcerers were defeated. David Smythe, a survivor, is trying once again to bring part of this mystical spirit into the world although in a less ambitious fashion. His plan involves channelling a portion of the Dulcarnon into a painter called Fewkes with the expectation that the artist will be able to both wield its power and form the template for an army of beings under Smythe's control. Unfortunately, the initiation of Fewkes was witnessed by Dorothy Amis, whose sanity was so shaken that she was confined to a nursing home. In the meantime, Fewkes' body has been moved to Cornwall and his mind and soul are imprisoned somewhere in the Dreamlands.
